Data Description
Abstract: This digital product contains the mineral claim, mining tract and petroleum reservation grids for the Province of Nova Scotia in a UTM NAD83 projection and datum. The NTS 1:50 000 map sheets are each divided into quarters and each of these quarters (labeled A,B,C and D) represent a claim reference map (DP ME 009) upon which claim staking is based in Nova Scotia. Each of these map sheets is then further subdivided for mineral staking into 108 mining tracts with 16 claims on each tract. The map sheet is also divided into 6 grids for use as petroleum reservations. This product contains the polygons that make up each of these grids for Nova Scotia.
Purpose: The purpose of this digital data set is to serve as a reference for mineral and petroleum staking in Nova Scotia.

Data Quality Information

Positional Accuracy
Positional Accuracy Report: There may be positional accuracy errors in the process of creating the Lat / Long grids in ArcInfo and then in the conversion of the grids from a geographic projection to UTM NAD27. The entire risk as to the quality and accuracy of the data is with the user and the user shall use his/her own judgment in making use of the data or drawing conclusions from it.

Processing Step Information

Processing Step (1 of 3)
Description: The grids were created in ArcInfo using an AML called NEWCLREFMAP.AML written by Brian Fisher.
  Software and Version: ArcInfo 7.x
  Date: 2000
  Contact Person: (see Contact Information)

Processing Step (2 of 3)
Description: In September - October 2005 the grids were re-projected to UTM zone 20 NAD83. This was to ensure that the grids were in the same projection and datum as the Mineral Rights registry which converted to NAD83 in April 2005. The re-projection was done using SHPTRANS within the ArcView 3.2a environment. The grids were first projected from NAD27 to Geographic NAD27 and then projected again from Geographic NAD83 to UTM 6 degree NAD83. This was done at the same time as digital product DP ME 009. The work was completed by Brian Fisher and Jeff Poole.

Processing Step (3 of 3)

Technical Prerequisite: In order to view this dataset, mapping software is required (eg. ArcView, MapInfo, AutoCad). If you do not have this software, ESRI provides a free map viewer called ArcExplorer, which you can download over the Internet. This viewer works with the E00 files and an ArcExplorer Import Utility (import71.exe) is needed to convert the E00 files into ArcInfo coverages, which can be then viewed in ArcExplorer. Problems have been reported trying to import ARC E00 files into ArcView on Windows 95 computers. Related tables do not import into ArcView. It is not a problem on UNIX, Windows 3.1 or Windows NT platforms. If you experience this problem you can use our DXF/DBF product which contains the tables in dBase format. dBase files can be imported into ArcView. This map is intended for use at the published scale of 1:50 000.
