Data Description
Abstract: This digital product is developed from a database of mineral rights information for the province of Nova Scotia. The database is maintained by the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources (NSNR&R), Mineral Resources Branch (MRB). The digital product was created by the NSNR&R MRB staff. The map was developed from information contained in the Mineral Rights Registry database. The information contained in this digital product was acquired from the Registry database and represents geothermal resource areas. A Geothermal Resource Area is an area which has been designated, pursuant to Sections 2(h) and 2(ha), the Mineral Resources Act, c. 18, SNS 1990, to allow for the exploration and possible exploitation of geothermal resources. A geothermal resource means a substance, including steam, water and water vapor, that is found anywhere below the surface and derives an added value from the natural heat of the earth present in, resulting from or created by the earth. The digital product contains a layer for the geothermal resource areas. MINERAL RIGHTS DISCLAIMER: Information for this digital product was acquired from the Mineral Rights Database on July 4, 2006. You may also check the DUMPDATE field in the databases to determine the date that the resources area was extracted from the Mineral Rights Database. This information is a graphic index only and designated areas may not in all cases be found as shown. For more detailed information consult the Registry of Mineral and Petroleum Titles.
Purpose: The purpose of this digital product is to provide a digital version of the geothermal resource areas in the province of Nova Scotia.

Processing Step Information

Processing Step (1 of 4)
Description: The attributes and georeferencing information required for the digital product are contained in a hierarchal database called Advanced Revelations. Two Advanced Revelation scripts (download.licences.to.GIS and download.permits.to.GIS) were written by Louis Crust. These exported a series of 34 ASCII files from the application, licences and mining permit tables in the database. An ArcInfo program called REGISTRY.AML was written by Brian Fisher to take the 34 ASCII files and build the ArcInfo coverages required to show the spatial extent of the licences and leases, and their attribute information. This AML extracts the information for the geothermal resource areas and creates a separate data set for it.

Processing Step (3 of 4)
Description: On October 20, 2003 digital product DP ME 53 version 1 was released. The data was extracted from the Mineral Rights database on October 6, 2003. There has been no chenge in the data since the release of Open File Map 2000-8 so version 1 of the digital product is meant to go with version 1 of OFM ME 2000-8. In future when a new version is required both the digital product and the OFM will be updated together.

Overview Description
Dataset Overview: The data set contains one shapefile called T053GTDA.SHP which contains all the claims which make up the designated areas and another called DGA.SHP which is the polygons of the designated areas. There are also 7 DBF tables that contain information which is already contained in the shapefile tables but is not normalized. The data has been normalized in these tables for those who want to use them. There is a metadata file in HTML format containing a description of all the fields contained in the tables. If you downloaded the SHP product this can be found in the metadata directory and is called DP051mdat.asp. Or you can access it over the internet at https://novascotia.ca/natr/meb/download/dp051mdat.asp

Technical Prerequisite: In order to view this dataset, mapping software is required (eg. ArcView, MapInfo, AutoCad). If you do not have this software, ESRI provides a free map viewer called ArcExplorer, which you can download over the Internet. This viewer works with the E00 files and an ArcExplorer Import Utility (import71.exe) is needed to convert the E00 files into ArcInfo coverages, which can be then viewed in ArcExplorer. Problems have been reported trying to import ARC E00 files into ArcView on Windows 95 computers. Related tables do not import into ArcView. It is not a problem on UNIX, Windows 3.1 or Windows NT platforms. If you experience this problem you can use our DXF/DBF product which contains the tables in dBase format. dBase files can be imported into ArcView.
