Data Description
Abstract: This digital product is a digital version of Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources (NSNR&R) Open File Map ME 2004-2, Surficial Geology Map of Port Hawkesbury Area (NTS 11F/11), Inverness, Richmond, Guysborough and Antigonish Counties, Nova Scotia, 2004, by R.R. Stea, scale 1:50 000. The digital product was created by the NSNR&R Mineral Resources Branch (MRB) staff. This map was produced as part of the joint federal-provincial Targeted Geoscience Initiative (South-central Cape Breton Island). Funding for this project provided by the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources and the Geological Survey of Canada
Purpose: The purpose of this data set is to create a digital version of NSNR&R Open File Map 2004-2. This digital product depicts the nature, distribution and thickness of surficial (surface-unconsolidated) deposits in the Port Hawkesbury map sheet of southwest Cape Breton Island.

Processing Step Information

Processing Step (1 of 6)
Description: The surficial mapping to create this map was done by Ralph Stea and Mary Feetham as part of the Targeted Geoscience Initiative project in South-central Cape Breton Island. The field data was then compiled into ArcView databases. Ralph Stea produced surficial geological contacts using the field data and airphoto interpretation. He marked the contacts onto the Air photos which were then scanned and georeferenced by John MacNeil and Julie Beaumont. The contacts were then digitized in ArcView by Ralph using shaded relief digital elevation models and the digital version of Grant's 1988 Surficial Geology Map of Cape Breton Island (Map 1631A).
  Software and Version: ArcView 3.2
  Date: summer 2000 - June 2003
  Contact Person: (see Contact Information)

Processing Step (2 of 6)
Description: The databases and shapefiles were then turned over to the MRB GIS Group. John MacNeil (until April 2003), followed by Julie Beaumont (until December 2003), and then Brian Fisher took the databases and shapefiles and built all the GIS databases and created the polygons for the surficial geological units. They then created a shaded relief surficial geology image by combining the surficial geology unit shapefile with a shaded relief digital elevation image using ArcView's spatial analyst extension.
Software and Version: ArcView 3.2, Spatial Analyst 2.0 and ArcInfo 8.3
  Date: February 2003 - December 2004
  Contact Person: (see Contact Information)

Processing Step (3 of 6)
Description: Once the GIS databases were complete Brian Fisher created the hard copy map using a basic layout provided by Ralph Stea and John MacNeil.
  Software and Version: ArcView 3.2a
  Date: February 2003 - December 2004
  Contact Person: (see Contact Information)

Processing Step (4 of 6)
Description: The new Open File Map 2004-2 was released in January 2005 as a hard copy map and in PDF format.
  Software and Version: none
  Date: January 2005
  Contact Person: (see Contact Information)

Processing Step (5 of 6)
Description: Digital Product DP ME 60 version 1 was released in February 2005. This contained all the GIS databases and images used on the hard copy map. The SHP product included the MRB GIS directory structure. This was the first product to be distributed in both a SHP "basic version" and "full version".
  Software and Version: ArcInfo 8.3
  Date: February 2005
  Contact Person: (see Contact Information)

Processing Step (6 of 6)
Description: In August 2006, version 2 of digital product DP ME 59 was released. The data was converted from the UTM zone 20 NAD27 projection and datum to UTM zone 20 NAD83 coordinates. No other changes were made to the data.
  Software and Version: ArcInfo 8.3

Technical Prerequisite: In order to view this dataset, mapping software is required (eg. ArcView, MapInfo, AutoCad). If you do not have this software, ESRI provides a free map viewer called ArcExplorer, which you can download over the Internet. This viewer works with the ArcInfo Export (E00) files and an ArcExplorer Import Utility (import71.exe) is needed to convert the ArcInfo Export (E00) files into ArcInfo coverages, which can be then viewed in ArcExplorer. Problems have been reported trying to import ARC ArcInfo Export (E00) files into ArcView on Windows 95 computers. Related tables do not import into ArcView. It is not a problem on UNIX, Windows 3.1 or Windows NT platforms. If you experience this problem you can use our DXF/DBF product which contains the tables in dBase format. dBase files can be imported into ArcView. This map is intended for use at the published scale of 1:50 000. In order to view our PDF files on your computer, you will require a PDF Viewer (e. g. Adobe(R) Acrobat(R) Reader). If you do not have this software, Adobe(R) provides this software for FREE download over the Internet. You will require Adobe(R) Acrobat(R) Reader version 4.0 or greater to view the PDF files. In February 2005 MRB began distributing two different versions of its SHP product. One is the "basic version" which is the same as what has been provided up to this point in time and includes all shapefiles and database tables. The new version is called the "full version" will contain everything in the "basic version" plus things such as photos, scanned images, text files, links to HTML pages, links to websites, etc. These entities are linked to the points, lines and polygons which make up the shapefiles. These can be accessed using the hotlink capability in ArcView and an ArcView extension developed by MRB called "Hotlink to Anything" which is provided with the data in the arcview/ext directory as a file called hotlink.avx. In order to use this capability check your ArcView manual to see where to place the .AVX file. This is normally under the c:\ESRI\AV_GIS30\ARCVIEW\EXT32 sub-directory. You will then need to edit the hotlink field in your shapefile attribute tables and place the path to the digital product on your system into that field. Please note if the field values begin with an "@" leave it as the first character in the string. Then under File / Extensions turn on the "Hotlink to Anything" extension. For each theme with a hotlink you will need to go to Theme / Properties Hotlink and then: set Field to hotlink; set Predefined Action to "Link to User Script"; and for Script select the "Hotlink.Anything" script from the list. We understand that this process may be a little complicated, but we plan to improve it in the next few months so look for a new version of the digital product in the near future.
