Data Description
Abstract: This digital product contains two images for total field bouguer gravity and residual bouguer gravity map images which were produced from data contained in Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources Open File Report 95-005. Gravity station spacing is variable throughout the map sheet and artifacts related to station spacing may be present in the final map image. The total field data set contains the cumulative measured response from surface features to upper crustal sources. The residual gravity image was derived from the total field data by subtracting long-wavelength (~>8-10km) signal from the total feild data to enhance near surface (<5km) features. Station spacing restricts grid cell size to 500m, which restricts near surface spatial resolution in the published map images. The 24-bit colour map images were produced with a 25m pixel size at 1:100 000 scale. Shading was from the southeast at 35 degrees above the horizon. The images were produced by contractor M.S. King using funds provided under the Natural Resources Canada and Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources joint project 'Geological Mapping for Mineral Development, South-central Cape Breton Island', part of Natural Resources Canada's Targeted Geoscience Initiative 2000-2003.
Purpose: The purpose of this data set was to enhance the level of geological knowledge in the Targeted Geoscience Initiative (TGI) project area. In particular, this project supported geological mapping for mineral development in south-central Cape Breton Island by providing insight into the three-dimensional geometry of Carboniferous basins in the study area. Many of these basins host salt and industrial mineral deposits and more recently, they are being investigated for natural gas deposits and potential natural gas storage. Exploration related to these targets relies on knowledge of the three-dimensional character of each Carboniferous basin and quantitative estimates are presently lacking the geoscience database. In order to develop the TGI potential field models, gravity and aeromagnetic data were processed to make enhanced map images of the project area at 1:100 000 scale. Profile data were extracted from these images and used in the modelling procedure.

Technical Prerequisite: In order to view our digital files on your computer, you require mapping software (e.g. ArcView(R), MapInfo(R), AutoCAD(R)). If you do not have this software, ESRI* provides a FREE Map Viewer called ArcExplorer(R) which you can download over the Internet. ArcExplorer(R) works with our "E00" and "TIFF" files. You need to download both ArcExplorer(R) and the ArcExplorer(R) Import Utility (Import71.exe). The import utility is required to convert the ArcInfo "E00" files into ArcInfo coverages, which then can be viewed in ArcExplorer(R).
