Data Description
Abstract: This digital product is a digital version of insert map Metallogenic Associations and Domains of Silver in Nova Scotia on the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources (NSNR&R) Published Map ME 1983-5, Metallogenic Map of Nova Scotia, compiled by A. K. Chatterjee, 1983. The digital product was created by the NSNR&R, Mineral Resources Branch (MRB) staff. The digital product was digitized from the Silver Domains insert map on Map ME 1983-5 and the databases were developed from the information contained on this map. The digital product contains layers for geological features such as: metallogenic silver domains and mineral occurrences.
Purpose: The purpose of this data set is to create a digital version of the Silver Domains insert map on NSNR&R Map ME 83-5. This digital product shows the metallogenic associations and domains of silver in Nova Scotia.

Processing Step Information

Processing Step (1 of 5)
Description: The map was originally digitized and databases built by Synmap Technologies as part of RFP 1994-001148. Corrections to the original digitizing and database coding were done by Synmap and the NSNR&R MRB Staff.
  Software and Version: CARIS
  Date: 1994
  Contact Person: (see Contact Information)

Processing Step (2 of 5)
Description: In 1997 NSNR&R released version 1 of digital product D83-05. This product contained both Map ME 83-5 and insert map Metallogenic Associations and Domains of Silver Map.
  Software and Version: ArcInfo
  Date: 1997
  Contact Person: (see Contact Information)

Processing Step (3 of 5)
Description: In 2002 the NSNR&R staff took the Domains of Silver Insert map and made a separate digital product from this map which was originally included with D83-05. The data set was given a new data set ID, p8305s (from p83m), and moved it to an ArcInfo workspace of the same name under BGEO1000. The following coverages were renamed: p83smo to p8305smo; p83sdo to p8305sdo; The original data set had two INFO lookup tables that were joined to the feature attribute tables as follows: p8305smo.sil_type was joined to p8305smo.pat; p8305sdo.sil_type was joined to p8305sdo.pat
Software and Version: ArcInfo 8.1 and ArcView 3.2a
  Date: May 2002
  Contact Person: (see Contact Information)

Processing Step (4 of 5)
Description: In February 2006 the data set was converted from being coverage based to shapefile based. All databases were updated to our current database structure. The data set was moved from BGEO1000 to MDEP1000. Some other changes were made to the databases as outlined below. P8305SDO - Silver Domains The domains were taken from the p8305sdo coverages and the fields from the associated PAT. This shapefile was linked to the sil_type.dbf files through the key field AGTYPCD. I added the elements from the dbf table to the table so that this list could be used in the legend and color the domains by the domain type. P8305SOG - Domain contacts The domain contacts were taken from the p8305sdo coverage and the fields from the associated AAT. P83005MO - Mineral deposits Previously the mineral deposit look up table were joined to a set of tables that linked directly to the PAT. I turned the coverage p83005mo into a shapefile and converted the three info tables into dbase tables. All the relates were set up within ArcView. This work was done by Brian Fisher.

Technical Prerequisite: In order to view this dataset, mapping software is required (eg. ArcView, MapInfo, AutoCad). If you do not have this software, ESRI provides a free map viewer called ArcExplorer, which you can download over the Internet. This viewer works with the E00 files and an ArcExplorer Import Utility (import71.exe) is needed to convert the E00 files into ArcInfo coverages, which can be then viewed in ArcExplorer. Problems have been reported trying to import ARC E00 files into ArcView on Windows 95 computers. Related tables do not import into ArcView. It is not a problem on UNIX, Windows 3.1 or Windows NT platforms. If you experience this problem you can use our DXF/DBF product which contains the tables in dBase format. dBase files can be imported into ArcView. This map is intended for use at the published scale of 1:1 000 000
