Data Description
Abstract: A regional stream sediment and water survey was carried out on northern mainland Nova Scotia and on Cape Breton Island between 1986-1987 with funding from the Geological Survey of Canada through the 1984-89 Canada - Nova Scotia mineral Development Agreement. Approximately 3300 stream sediment samples, including duplicates, were analyzed for: Ag, As, Ce, Co, Cr, Cs, Eu, Fe, Hf, Ir, La, Lu, Mo, Na, Sb, Sc, Se, Sm, Sn, Ta, Tb, Th, Ti, U, W, Yb, Zn, Au, Ba, Br, Cd, Ni, Rb, Tr and Zr in the coarse (-60 - +230) heavy mineral separate fraction, and Ag, Al, Au, Ba, Bi, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Li, Mn, Na, Ni, Rb, V, Zn, and K in the fine (-230) fraction. Stream waters were analyzed for uranium and fluorine. This digital product consists of a compilation of the results of this survey. This data set was previously included as part of a compilation of geochemical surveys and released as DP 004 version 1. This data set previously consisted of st867fb1, st867hb1, and stw867b1, which were later renamed to c135nccf, c135ncch and c135nccw. Further information about the survey and analysis can be found in the draft documents: survey_description.wpd, elements_cf.wb3, elements_ch.wb3, elements_cw.wb3 and fields_cw.wb3 that are supplied with the data set.
Purpose: The aim of this survey was to provide new geochemical data on stream water and two fractions of stream sediment in order to investigate the potential for gold mineralization in the northern half of Nova Scotia. The purpose of this project was to create a digital dataset in GIS format consisting of the stream sediment and water geochemistry over northern Nova Scotia.

Processing Step Information

Processing Step (1 of 6)
Description: Survey Description: In 1986 and 1987 a regional stream sediment survey was carried out on northern mainland Nova Scotia and on Cape Breton Island. The aim of this survey was to provide new geochemical data on stream water and two fractions of stream sediment in order to investigate the potential for gold mineralization in the northern half of Nova Scotia. Approximately 3300 stream sediment samples, including duplicates, were analyzed for 31 elements in the coarse (-60 - +230) heavy mineral separate fraction, and 16 elements in the fine (-230) fraction resulting in approximately 152,000 different elemental analyses. Some of these analyses are supplemented with fire assay analyses for gold. Stream waters were analyzed for uranium and fluorine; conductivity and pH measurements were taken in the field. This digital product consists of a compilation of the results of this survey. The digital product contains layers for geochemical features such as: biological, heavy fraction and water samples, as well as the result of stream sediment / stream water surveys. The aim of this digital data set was to provide new geochemical data on stream water and two fractions of stream sediment in order to investigate the potential for gold mineralization in the northern half of Nova Scotia.

Technical Prerequisite: In order to view this dataset, mapping software is required (eg. ArcView, MapInfo, AutoCad). If you do not have this software, ESRI provides a free map viewer called ArcExplorer, which you can download over the Internet. This viewer works with the E00 files and an ArcExplorer Import Utility (import71.exe) is needed to convert the E00 files into ArcInfo coverages, which can be then viewed in ArcExplorer. Problems have been reported trying to import ARC E00 files into ArcView on Windows 95 computers. Related tables do not import into ArcView. It is not a problem on UNIX, Windows 3.1 or Windows NT platforms. If you experience this problem you can use our DXF/DBF product which contains the tables in dBase format. dBase files can be imported into ArcView. This map is intended for use at the published scale of 1:#MSCALE#
