Data Description
Abstract: Geological mapping of the South Mountain Batholith (SMB) was undertaken from 1984 to 1989 by the Nova Scotia Department of Mines and Energy under the Canada-Nova Scotia Mineral Development Agreement (CNSMDA). Two geochemical surveys were carried out as part of this project: A regional till survey involved the collection of 2100 samples on a 2 km * 2 km grid over the batholith. These were analyzed for Ni, Cr, Ba, Th,Sc, Pb, Zn, Cu, As, Rb, Sb, Ta, W, Au, U, Fe and Mn. The samples were later re-analyzed for Sn. A second lithogeochem survey was also undertaken. The lithogeochemical samples were collected as part of a detailed mapping program and includes data from the eastern portion of the SMB mapped in 1985 and 1986 and the western portion of the batholith mapped in 1988. Four hundred and fifty-six samples were collected from the eastern portion of the batholith. These were analyzed for SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, CaO, MgO, Na2O, K2,O, TiO2, P2O5, MnO, Ba, Rb, Sr, Zr, Nb, V, Y, Ga, Cu, Zn, Hf, Ta, Sc, La, Th, U, Li, F, As, Sn and W. This data set was previously included as part of a compilation of geochemical surveys and released as DP 004 version 1. This data set previously consisted of smb_till, snsmb_ti and smb_lith, which were later renamed to c137smct-a, c137smct-b and c137smcr. Further information about the survey and analysis can be found in the draft documents: survey_description_cr.wpd, survey_description_ct.wpd, elements_cr.wb3, elements_ct.wb3, fields_cr.wb3 and fields_ct.wb3 that are supplied with the data set.
Purpose: The objectives of the geochemical survey were to: (1) distinguish tills on the basis of their geochemistry; (2) identify patterns of geochemical dispersion from known bedrock sources; (3) interpret these patterns in light of increased knowledge of the surficial geology of the South Mountain Batholith and (4) provide a geochemical database that would aid in evaluation of the economic potential of the batholith through the identification of areas of elevated background geochemistry. The purpose for the creation of this data set was to create a digital dataset in GIS format consisting of the till and rock geochemistry of the South Mountain Batholith over western Nova Scotia.

Processing Step Information

Processing Step (1 of 7)
Description: Survey Description: A regional till geochemical survey was carried out as part of the South Mountain Batholith (SMB) Pleistocene mapping project, a contribution to the Canada-Nova Scotia Mineral Development Agreement (1984-1989). This project involved the collection of 2100 till samples on a 2 km2 grid. Samples consisted of 8-10 kg of till matrix sieved through a 1.25 cm plastic screen. In most cases till was sampled through ice contact deposits or residuum were locally collected. Glacial deposits were mapped and sampled, primarily in road cuts and hand-dug soil pits. Field observations of colour, texture, sedimentary structure, stratigraphy, morphological expression and erosional features such as crag and tail striations were recorded. Approximately 100 to 300 clasts were collected from each sample location. The clasts were later examined in detail and the relative percentages of the different granite and non-granite lithologies were calculated. Geochemical data from the -230 mesh fraction of till for the elements Ni, Cr, Ba, Th, Sc, Pb, Zn, Cu, As, Rb, Sb, Ta, W, U, Fe, and Mn are presented. Tin concentrations in heavy mineral concentrates (HMC) are presented as raw and weighted values for the western part of the SMB as well as the eastern and central parts of the SMB. Geological mapping of the South Mountain Batholith (SMB) was undertaken from 1984 to 1989 by the Nova Scotia Department of Mines and Energy under the Canada-Nova Scotia Mineral Development Agreement (CNSMDA). A geochemical program was conducted to establish the compositions of individual granitic rock units within the batholith, as determined by field mapping. The lithogeochemical data represents this detailed mapping program and includes data from the eastern portion of the SMB mapped in 1985 and 1986 and the western portion of the batholith mapped in 1988. Four hundred and fifty-six (456) samples were collected form the eastern portion of the batholith (NTS Map Sheets 11D/05, 11D/12, 11D/13, 21A/09, 21A/10, 21A/15, 21A/16 and parts of 21H/01 and 21H/02) and one hundred and forty-one (141) samples were collected from the western portion of the batholith (N.T.S. mapsheets 21A/3, 21A/4, 21A/5, 21A/6, 21A/11, 21A/12, 21A/14). Samples were selected using various criteria: first, to represent the full range of textures and compositions in order to determine local variations of lithological units and second, to represent uniform coverage geographically in order to determine any regional variations of the units. The objectives of the geochemical survey were to: (1) distinguish tills on the basis of their geochemistry; (2) identify patterns of geochemical dispersion from known bedrock sources; (3) interpret these patterns in light of increased knowledge of the surficial geology of the South Mountain Batholith and (4) provide a geochemical database that would aid in evaluation of the economic potential of the batholith through the identification of areas of elevated background geochemistry.

Technical Prerequisite: In order to view this dataset, mapping software is required (eg. ArcView, MapInfo, AutoCad). If you do not have this software, ESRI provides a free map viewer called ArcExplorer, which you can download over the Internet. This viewer works with the E00 files and an ArcExplorer Import Utility (import71.exe) is needed to convert the E00 files into ArcInfo coverages, which can be then viewed in ArcExplorer. Problems have been reported trying to import ARC E00 files into ArcView on Windows 95 computers. Related tables do not import into ArcView. It is not a problem on UNIX, Windows 3.1 or Windows NT platforms. If you experience this problem you can use our DXF/DBF product which contains the tables in dBase format. dBase files can be imported into ArcView.
