Data Description
Abstract: A surficial mapping and till geochemistry program covering the southern mainland Meguma Terrane in Nova Scotia, was conducted from 1977-1982 by the Canada Department of Regional Economic Expansion and Nova Scotia Department of Mines. Surficial mapping and trace element analysis of till deposits in northern mainalnd Nova Scotia was conducted from 1982-1985. This part of the project was funded under the Canada - Nova Scotia Cooperative Mineral Program 1981-84 and the Canada - Nova Scotia Mineral Development Agreement. An average of 140 samples per 1000 km2 were taken. Depending on the year of the survey, samples were analyzed for: Ag, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, Ni, Co, Fe, Mn, Ca, Mg, Hg, As, Mo, U, Sn, W, and Ba. This data set was previously included as part of a compilation of geochemical surveys and released as DP 004 version 1. This data set was previously called meg_till and later renamed to c138mlct. Further information about the survey and analysis can be found in the draft documents: survey_description.wpd, elements.wb3 and fields.wb3 that are supplied with the data set.
Purpose: The purpose of this project was to create a digital dataset in GIS format consisting of the till geochemistry of mainland Nova Scotia′s including the Meguma Terrane.

Processing Step (1 of 6)
Description: Survey Description: A surficial mapping and till geochemistry program was initiated in 1977 by the Canada Department of Regional Economic Expansion and Nova Scotia Department of Mines. It covers all of mainland Nova Scotia. Map sheets 1-8 cover the Meguma Terrane and was completed in 1982. Surficial mapping and trace element analysis of till deposits in northern Nova Scotia was initiated in 1982 in Cumberland County. Sheets 9-13 cover northern mainland Nova Scotia. This part of the project was funded under the Canada - Nova Scotia Cooperative Mineral Program 1981-84 and the Canada - Nova Scotia Mineral Development Agreement. The classification of tills is based on lithology, texture and genesis because tills classified according to these criteria have distinct geochemical signatures. Field sampling of tills was done in road cuts, burrow pits, sea cliffs and stream cuts at an average depth of 2 m. Where exposure was limited, pits were dug by hand to obtain samples. An average of 140 samples per 1000 km2 were taken. The clay size fraction (< 2 microns) was analysed for between 12 and 17 elements depending on the year of the survey.

Technical Prerequisite: In order to view this dataset, mapping software is required (eg. ArcView, MapInfo, AutoCad). If you do not have this software, ESRI provides a free map viewer called ArcExplorer, which you can download over the Internet. This viewer works with the E00 files and an ArcExplorer Import Utility (import71.exe) is needed to convert the E00 files into ArcInfo coverages, which can be then viewed in ArcExplorer. Problems have been reported trying to import ARC E00 files into ArcView on Windows 95 computers. Related tables do not import into ArcView. It is not a problem on UNIX, Windows 3.1 or Windows NT platforms. If you experience this problem you can use our DXF/DBF product which contains the tables in dBase format. dBase files can be imported into ArcView.
