Data Description
Abstract: This digital product is a compilation of geological data which was collected as part of the Cobequid Highlands mapping project from 1983-1999. The data was used to create Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources (NSNR&R) Open File Maps ME 2000-114, 115, 116 and 117, compiled by G. Pe-Piper and D. J. W. Piper, 2005. The digital product was created by the NSNR&R, Mineral Resources Branch (MRB) staff. The original digital data was compiled in fieldlog databases during the project and was later converted by MRB staff into ArcView format. The digital product contains layers for geological features such as: faults, bedrock geologic units, geological contacts, mineral occurrences, outcrops, drillholes, structural data, samples, photo locations and paleocurrent features.
Purpose: The purpose of this data set is to create an ArcView version of the data collected as part of the Cobequid Hightlands mapping project and to produce four new 1:50 000 maps of the highlands. This digital product shows the bedrock geology on parts of 1:50 000 NTS map sheets 11E/05, 11E/06, 11E/11, 11E/12, 21H/07, 21H/08 and 21H/09.

Processing Step (2 of 8)
Description: In 2000 David Piper contacted Bob Boehner, Manager of Regional Mapping at NSNR&R, and requested his assistance to publish 4 1:50 000 maps for his recent mapping project in the Cobequid Highlands. NSNR&R agreed to a joint publication of the 4 maps with the GSC.
  Date: Fall 2000
  Contact Person: (see Contact Information)

Processing Step (3 of 8)
Description: Wayne Burt, NSNR&R cartographic services and mapping, agreed to produce the 4 maps on a non-priority basis. The MRB GIS group agreed to provided advice on the conversion of the databases into ArcView format and release a digtial version of the data after the maps were produced. work continued on the data conversion and map production over the next few years.

Processing Step (4 of 8)
Description: In December Mike Cherry, Director Geolgoocal Services Division NR&R, requested that the MRB GIS group take over production of the 4 maps and make them a priority. Jeff Poole and Jeff McKinnon took the database and made final corrections and competed the data conversion. They then worked to ensure the the database being read by the ArcView project and the digital prodcut were merged into one. The databases were then brought into MRB's standard format and quality control performed.

Technical Prerequisite: In order to view this dataset, mapping software is required (eg. ArcView, MapInfo, AutoCad). If you do not have this software, ESRI provides a free map viewer called ArcExplorer, which you can download over the Internet. This viewer works with the E00 files and an ArcExplorer Import Utility (import71.exe) is needed to convert the E00 files into ArcInfo coverages, which can be then viewed in ArcExplorer. Problems have been reported trying to import ARC E00 files into ArcView on Windows 95 computers. Related tables do not import into ArcView. It is not a problem on UNIX, Windows 3.1 or Windows NT platforms. If you experience this problem you can use our DXF/DBF product which contains the tables in dBase format. dBase files can be imported into ArcView. This map is intended for use at the published scale of 1:50 000. In order to view our PDF files on your computer, you will require a PDF Viewer (e.g. Adobe(R) Acrobat(R) Reader). If you do not have this software, Adobe(R) provides this software, Adobe(R) provides this software for FREE download over the Internet. You will require Adobe(R) Acrobat(R) Reader version 4.0 or greater to view the PDF files. In order to use the hotlink feature within ArcView 3.x in you may need to load MRB's Hotlink Anything extension which may be located in the arcview/ext directory along with documentation. You may also need to set the variable MEBGIS_HOME on your system to the location of the data set on your system. The SHP product provides an ArcView project set up with the hotlinks working. Some modifications to the HOTLINK field in the database tables or in the HLFILES may be required to make the hotlink work properly. Knowledge of ArcView and hotlinks may be required to make this work properly.
