Data Quality Information

Positional Accuracy
Positional Accuracy Report: There may be positional accuracy errors in the digital data that come from the original data collection, plus there are errors added by the process of digitizing the features off the original published GSC Map 740. The digital map was then transformed from digitizer table units into UTM NAD27 using a series of common control points between the gold district map and the digital 1:10 000 topographic base maps that it was projected onto. There will be some inaccuracies resulting from this process as well as those that are inherent in the 1:10 000 base maps. Each digital gold district map is supplied with a file called g740tic.txt that gives the coordinates of the control points, a file called g740rms.txt which contains the RMS report produced by the transformation performed in ArcInfo, and a thematic layer called g740cp which contains the control points. These are supplied so that the user can gain some understanding of the inaccuracies that resulted from the transformation. The entire risk as to the quality and accuracy of the data is with the user and the user shall use his/her own judgment in making use of the data or drawing conclusions from it.

Processing Step Information

Processing Step (1 of 7)
Description: In 1998, the Mineral Resources Branch began a project to digitize 30 of the Faribault Gold District maps that were published by the GSC from the late 1800's through the early 1900's. The maps were digitized in Fieldlog / AutoCAD on a Calcomp digitizing table. They were not registered to any base or coordinate system on the map but were digitized in table units. All the geological features along with the planimetric base were digitized. The work was done by casual employee Gayle Chapman.
Software and Version: Fieldlog / AutoCAD 12
  Date: fall 1998 - summer 1999
  Contact Person: (see Contact Information)

Processing Step (2 of 7)
Description: In the summer of 1999, MRB began working on georeferencing the digital Gold District maps. This was done by collecting the XY coordinates for a series of points common to both the current NSTDB 1:10 000 base maps and the Gold District maps. ArcInfo was then used to transform the maps from digitizer table units into the map coordinates. This was done using an AML called gd-proj.aml written by Brian Fisher. This work was done by summer student Megan Surrette.
  Software and Version: ArcInfo 7.2.1
  Date: summer 1999
  Contact Person: (see Contact Information)

Processing Step (3 of 7)
Description: The digital maps were then brought into ArcView and a project created for each of the Gold District maps containing all the databases, hotlinking appropriate features to the databases and using common legends for the various themes. This work was done by summer student Megan Surrette.
  Software and Version: ArcView 3.1
  Date: summer 2000
  Contact Person: (see Contact Information)

Processing Step (4 of 7)
Description: In the summer of 2004, Brian Fisher ran an AML to correct a projection problem with each of the gold district layers. It appears that the 1:10 000 base layers originally used to rectify the gold district layers to had been projected inaccurately to NAD 27. There was a 50m E-W shift in the data. We determined the cause of the error and projected the 1:10 000 base layers back to the correct location and then ran the same projection correction on the gold district layers. The new layers were then checked by Sheri Lyon and Jordana Gardiner.
  Software and Version: ArcInfo 8.3
  Date: summer 2004
  Contact Person: (see Contact Information)

Processing Step (5 of 7)
Description: In the summer of 2005, two summer students, Sheri Lyon and Rebecca Brunt, continued to do some final work on the maps. They converted the coverages into shapefiles and reviewed each of the data sets and identified a number of double line roads and streams that had snapped together and then corrected the problem. They ran a series of Avenue scripts to standardize the database tables, populated the database fields, standardized the legends and ArcView theme names. After completing this they created a new NAD83 version of the shapefiles and new ARC coverages in both NAD27 and NAD83. Sheri also digitized two new gold district maps 1814 and 1816 from a scanned georeferenced map.
Software and Version: ArcView 3.2a and ArcInfo 8.3
  Date: summer 2005
  Contact Person: (see Contact Information)

Processing Step (6 of 7)
Description: In March 2006 Brian Fisher did a final review of the data set and checked the following items: 1 - reviewed the metadata and changed the file name to the proper name; 2 - reviewed the MAPSCAN directory to see if SID files existed; 3 - checked the hotlinks and corrected any not working; 4 - checked the OC and ST themes and linked them together if they were not; 5 - I added the string "gis2006-" to the station numbers (STATI_NUM) in the OS, ST and SH themes. I updated the STATI_PRFX, STATI_ID and STATI_NUM fields in the OS shapefile. In the ST shapefile I had to update the STATI_NUM field by removing the reference to OS in the values. In the SH shapefile I removed the OC reference in the STATI_PFRX field and updated the STATI_NUM field.

Technical Prerequisite: In order to view this data set, mapping software is required (eg. ArcView, MapInfo, AutoCAD). If you do not have this software, ESRI provides a free map viewer called ArcExplorer, which you can download over the Internet. This viewer works with the E00 files and an ArcExplorer Import Utility (import71.exe) is needed to convert the E00 files into ArcInfo coverages, which can be then viewed in ArcExplorer. ArcView Project Information Our SHP products include an ArcView project which have all of the shapefiles symbolized and tables loaded with link and joins already created. This project uses relative paths so it should be drive and path independent. It can be found in the c:\data_set_id\arcview\project directory. ArcExplorer Project Information We have also included an ArcExplorer 2 project (.aep) and an ArcExplorer 4 (.axl) project for this data set that can be found in the c:\data_set_id\arcexpl directory. The shapefiles are already loaded and have limited symbolization, any related tables are not loaded. The AEP project uses relative paths and should be no problem using it without any changes. The AXL project includes a string "#DPMEPATH#" which you will need to search for and replace with your drive letter and a colon (ex: c:) in order to make the project work. Please note the if you do not install the data set using the default path you may need to replace other parts of the reference to the path in the AXL. Hotlinks In order to use the hotlink feature within ArcView 3.x in you may need to load MRB's Hotlink Anything extension which may be located in the arcview/ext directory along with documentation. You may also need to set the variable MEBGIS_HOME on your system to the location of the data set on your system. The SHP product provides an ArcView project set up with the hotlinks working. Some modifications to the HOTLINK field in the database tables or in the HLFILES may be required to make the hotlink work properly. Knowledge of ArcView and hotlinks may be required to make this work properly. A feature called hotlinks is used in ArcView to link a feature such as a mineral occurrence or cross section to a single text file, image or website etc. For features that we want to link multiple items or documents to we have developed our own hotlink extension for ArcView 3.x called "Hotlink Anything". The extension and documentation on how to install the extension, and set the required MEBGIS_HOME variable to the location of the data set on your system is included in the x:\nsgov\dig_prod_num\data_set_id\arcview\ext directory (example - c:\nsgov\dp305v1sh\g118a\arcview\ext) assuming that you used our default directories when downloading the data. The SHP product provides an ArcView project set up with the hotlinks working. Some modifications to the HOTLINK field in the database tables or in the HLFILES.TXT file may be required to make the hotlink work properly. Knowledge of ArcView and hotlinks may be required to make the native hotlink utility or our extension work properly Problems and Limitations Problems have been reported trying to import ARC E00 files into ArcView on Windows 95 computers. Related tables do not import into ArcView. It is not a problem on UNIX, Windows 3.1 or Windows NT platforms. If you experience this problem you can use our DXF/DBF product which contains the tables in dBase format. dBase files can be imported into ArcView. This map is intended for use at the published scale of 1:3 000.
