Data Description |
|
Abstract: |
This digital product is developed from a database of published abandoned mine openings for the province of Nova Scotia. The database is maintained by the Nova Scotia Department of Energy and Mines (NSDEM), Geoscience and Mines Branch (GMB). The digital product was created by the NSDEM GMB staff. The database provides approximate coordinate locations for many of the abandoned mine openings, and also provides a source reference on each mine opening.
|
|
Purpose: |
To identify the location of abandoned mine openings with the hope of presenting potential mineral rights holders with a province wide overview of the locations of past mineral production and an exploration guide to finding new deposits.

Data Quality Information |
|
Positional Accuracy |
|
Horizontal Accuracy Report: |
There may be positional accuracy errors in the data that come from the original data collection, plus there are errors added by the process of digitizing the features off the original map. The entire risk as to the quality and accuracy of the data is with the user and the user shall use his/her own judgment in making use of the data or drawing conclusions from it. The accuracy of those openings on private land will vary with each opening. The accuracy of the majority of the openings on Crown land should be +/- 5m and on private land could be up to +\- 50m.

In 1997 a copy of the FoxPro databse was provided to Brian Fisher who converted it into an ArcInfo coverage using an AML called PT2UTM20.AML. The resultant GIS database was released in E00 and DXF/DBF formats as digital product DP 010 version 1 in 1997.

In 2000 a second version of the database was released in E00 and DXF/DBF formats. The FoxPro databases were supplied by Ernie Hennick to Brian Fisher who processed it using the PT2UTM20.AML program.

In August 2006, the GIS version of the database was renamed from SHAFTS to D010NS. The data was converted from UTM zone 20 NAD27 to UTM zone 20 NAD83. The data is the same as was contained in Version 2, but the coordiantes are now in the datum NAD83. Version 3 of the database was released in January 2006 in SHP, E00 and DXF/DBF formats.

Processing Step (5 of 13) |
|
Description: |
I received an updated copy of the Abandoned Mine Opening database from Ernie. He wanted the co-ordinates in his FoxPro version of the database adjusted to NAD83 so that he could use the database in ArcView 3.2a and update the coordinates. In cooperation with Ernie we identified a problem with the coordinates in many areas of the province. When co-ordinate data for the shafts was collected in the past it was done so relative to the NTS 1:50 000 base maps. By this we mean that the location of the hole was placed on the topo map and the co-ordinate calculated from the location on the hard copy map. When Ernie started using his data in ArcView with the 1:10 000 base layers he found that many of the shafts did not appear to be in the correct location. The reason for this that the 1:10 000 base data is far more accurate that the 1:50 000 base data. In fact many features such as roads, streams lakes etc have moved a couple of hundred meters or more. The result of this that the shafts which were located relative to these feature on the 1:50 000 maps are now in the "wrong" located on the 1:10 000 base maps.
Ernie and John MacNeil went into the field with maps, GPS and ArcPad to check the location of a number of shafts and determined that in fact the problem was the change in resolution between the 1:10 000 and 1:50 000 maps that created the apparent "error". Through the summer of 2008 Ernie undertook a program in ArcView 3.2a to relocate many of the holes based on the current 1:10 000 maps.

Description: |
The .PRJ file was updated to reflect the actualy datum we are using NAD83 CSRS98. This was done by coping a new .PRJ file into the directory with the shapefile. No changes were made to the shapefile itself. The old shapefile was copied to a file called *.prj_old.

Description: |
In 2009 the abandoned mine openings database was migrated from FoxPro to a new SQL Server application. This work was done under the direction of Ernie Hennick and the GIS staff including Davis Sun and Jeff Poole. DP ME 10, version 4 of the datbase is the last data extracted from the FoxPro application and the first used in the new SQL Server application.
The new application can be accessed for querying through the Internet web site at http://gis3.natr.gov.ns.ca/amosearch

Technical Prerequisite: |
In order to view our digital files on your computer, you require mapping software (e.g. ArcGIS, MapInfo, QGIS). KML files can also be used with Google Earth. The TIF and JPG image file formats can be viewed in a number of graphics and image packages including CorelDraw and Paint Shop Pro. The MRSID SID images can be viewed in an increasing number of image packages as well as with a free MrSID viewer supplied by LizardTech. Links for these and other map viewers can be found at http://www.gov.ns.ca/natr/meb/pubs/pubs3.htm.
Data Formats
GMB provides its digital data products in a number of formats. You can find our more information on these format and how to use them at http://www.gov.ns.ca/natr/meb/download/dpformat.htm.
ArcMap Map Document Information
Our SHP and FGDB products include an ArcMap map document (MXD files) which have all of the features symbolized and tables loaded with links and joins already created. These MXD's use relative paths so it should be drive and path independent. The MXD files can be found in the c:\nsdnr\data_set_id\arcmap\project directory. They are part of the SHP and GDB products.
KML Files
KML/KMZ files for this dataset can be found under the c:\nsdnr\data_set_id\kml directory. They can be opened using Google Earth or a number of other GIS software packages.
