Data Description
Abstract: This digital product is a digital version of four Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources(NSNR&R) Open File Maps (2009-2, 2009-3, 2009-4 and 2009-5) compiled by R. J. Horne, R. J. Ryan, M. C. Corey and D. L. Fox in 2009. The original data collection was done as part of the Central Meguma Mapping Project from 1995-1999, minor follow up work was done in 2002-2004. The four 1:25 000 maps were produced in 2009 from the data contained in the digital product. The digital product was created by the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources, Mineral Resources Branch (MRB) staff. The digital product contains layers for geological features such as: anticlines and synclines, drillholes, faults, bedrock units, geological units, mineral occurrences, outcrops, structural data, veins and gold districts.
Purpose: The purpose of this data set is to create a digital version of all the data collected as part of the Central Meguma mapping project.

Data Quality Information

Positional Accuracy
Positional Accuracy Report: There may be positional accuracy errors in the digital data that come from the original data collection, plus there are errors added by the process of digitizing the features from the original published map or field maps. The transfer of this data from older base maps onto the current base maps may also produce some error.

The user should be aware that using this data overlaid on topographic data that was not used during the digital capture of the data may result in apparent errors in the locations of the data that may or may not be real. The user should always try and use background topographic data that is the same as the source topographic data noted in this metadata.

The entire risk as to the quality and accuracy of the data is with the user and the user shall use his/her own judgment in making use of the data or drawing conclusions from it.

Processing Step (2 of 9)
Description: During the summer of 2004 Sheri Lyon and Jordana Gardinier worked primarily with Jeff Poole and Jeff McKinnon to convert a number of AutoCAD Fieldlog database into ARC format for the Central Meguma Project. The data was placed into 5 digital products (140 - 144) based on the origin of the fieldlog databases. This was done to keep similar data grouped together for the conversion and QA process. The work divided up as follows:

Sheri Lyon:

D140CM: consisted of six 1:10 000 Open File Maps and their associated field log databases created by Rick Horne

1998-4 - Airport 1998-5 - Soldier Lake 1998-6 - Fall River 1998-7 - Lucasville 1998-8 - Sackville 1998-9 - Waverley 1998-10 - Newport

D142CM: consisted of data for five 1:10 000 map sheets mapped by Bob Ryan and placed into AutoCAD / Fieldlog. Data was also digitized in ArcView from a number of paper maps supplied by Bob Ryan.

Shubenacadie Grand Lake Enfield South Uniacke Wellington East Uniacke.

Jordana Gardiner:

D141CM: consisted of AutoCAD data for four 1:10 000 mapsheets mapped by Don Fox. There were no associated fieldlog databases.

South Rawdon - YSFMRD Moore Lake - YSGMPJ Jim Horne Lake - YSHLTW Lakeland - YS9YRE

D143CM: consisted of AutoCAD / Fieldlog data for four 1:10 000 mapsheets mapped by Mike Corey.

Pockwock - YS3MRG Springfield - YS4MPN Mount Uniacke - YS9ARF Upper Hammond Plains - YMXYRH (AutoCAD drawing only)

D144CM: consisted of AutoCAD / Fieldlog data for one 1:10 000 mapsheets mapped by Rick Horne but not published.

Processing Step (3 of 9)
Description: During the summer of 2005 summer student Liam Fitzgerald took the data compiled in digital products 140-144 and combined them together into a single new product called d147cm. Liam performed further QA on the data and then standardized the tables for the 4 data sets. Liam also identified further input that was required from Rick Horne and Bob Ryan.

Liam then began working on the 1987-8 map because part of it was required to fill in a portion of the new Central Meguma map. This data was originally digitized by Adam Sherry and then Liam updating the previously created coverages and shapefile to our current format, performing QA on the database and making any edit changes required.
    Software and Version: ArcView 3.2a
    Date: 2005
    Contact Person: (see Contact Information)

Processing Step (4 of 9)
Description: In 2005 Jeff McKinnon took the work done by Liam (the five central meguma databases combines together) and added to it the South Mountain Batholith geology in the south-west from the 1987-8 map and in the north-east added in the Musqudoboit Basin geology from map 1984-2 in order to complete the 1:50 000 NTS sheet.

Jeff also did an initial build of the polygons for the map so that Rick could display it at the annual Open House.
Software and Version: ArcMap 9.x and ArcView 3.2a
    Date: 2005
    Contact Person: (see Contact Information)

Processing Step (5 of 9)
Description: In 2005-2008 Angie Ehler began the process of producing a 1:50 000 map from the databases that were compiled. During this time there were many changes may to the map and databases by both Rick Horne and Bob Ryan.
    Software and Version: ArcMap 9.x
    Date: 2005 - 2008
    Contact Person: (see Contact Information)

Processing Step (6 of 9)
Description: In 2008 a decision was made to produce four 1:25 000 maps instead of the single 1:50 000 because Rick and Bob were having a hard time removing enough data from the 1:50 000 map to make it useful.
    Software and Version: ArcMap 9.3
    Date: 2008

Processing Step (7 of 9)
Description: In 2009 Jeff McKinnon did a final review of all the Central Meguma (d147) databases and map 1987-8 (d179mn) databases to ensure that they were up to our current standards.
    Software and Version: ArcMap 9.3
    Date: 2009

Technical Prerequisite: In order to view our digital files on your computer, you require mapping software (e.g. ArcGIS, ArcInfo, ArcView, MapInfo, AutoCAD). If you do not have this software, ESRI provides two free Map Viewer called ArcExplorer2 and ArcExplorer4 which you can download over the Internet. ArcExplorer2 works with our "E00", "SHP", "JPG", "SID" and "TIF" files, while ArcExplorer4 worked with our SHP, TIF, JPG and web services. The "TIF" and "JPG" image file formats can be viewed in a number of graphics and image packages including CorelDraw and Paint Shop Pro. The MRSID "SID" images can be viewed in an increasing number of image packages as well as with a free MrSID viewer supplied by LizardTech. Links for these and other map viewers can be found at the bottom of https://novascotia.ca/natr/meb/download/gis-data-maps.asp.

Data Formats

MRB provides its digital data products in a number of formats. You can find our more information on these format and how to use them at https://novascotia.ca/natr/meb/download/dpformat.asp.

Fonts

A number of NR&R or GSC fonts may be required to properly view our data sets in an ArcMap project or to view the hard copy maps in a PDF format (normally the fonts will be embedded in the PDF). The fonts required for a particular data set may be found in the c:\nsDNR\dp999v9XX\d999YY\arcmap\fonts directory on your computer after you download the data set. A complete set of all of our fonts will be installed in the c:\nsDNR\fonts directory which is automatically installed and updated with our digital products. In order to see a complete list of fonts that are used and to download the NR&R and GSC fonts from our website please go tohttps://novascotia.ca/natr/meb/download/dpinfo.asp. Any of these fonts can be installed on your computer by using going to Start - Settings - Control Panel - Fonts - File - Install.

ArcMap Project Information

Our SHP products include an ArcMap project which have all of the shapefiles symbolized and tables loaded with link and joins already created. This project uses relative paths so it should be drive and path independent. It can be found in the c:\data_set_id\arcmap\project directory.

ArcView Project Information

Our SHP products include an ArcView project which have all of the shapefiles symbolized and tables loaded with link and joins already created. This project uses relative paths so it should be drive and path independent. It can be found in the c:\data_set_id\arcview\project directory.

ArcExplorer Project Information

We have also included an ArcExplorer 2 project (.aep) and an ArcExplorer 4 (.axl) project for this data set that can be found in the c:\data_set_id\arcexpl directory. The shapefiles are already loaded and have limited symbolization, any related tables are not loaded. The AEP project uses relative paths and should be no problem using it without any changes. The AXL project includes a string "#DPMEPATH#" which you will need to search for and replace with your drive letter and a colon (ex: c:) in order to make the project work. Please note the if you do not install the data set using the default path you may need to replace other parts of the reference to the path in the AXL.

Hotlinks

In order to use the hotlink feature within ArcView 3.x in you may need to load MRB's Hotlink Anything extension which may be located in the arcview/ext directory along with documentation. You may also need to set the variable MEBGIS_HOME on your system to the location of the data set on your system. The SHP product provides an ArcView project set up with the hotlinks working. Some modifications to the HOTLINK field in the database tables or in the HLFILES may be required to make the hotlink work properly. Knowledge of ArcView and hotlinks may be required to make this work properly.

A feature called hotlinks is used in ArcView to link a feature such as a mineral occurrence or cross section to a single text file, image or website etc. For features that we want to link multiple items or documents to we have developed our own hotlink extension for ArcView 3.x called "Hotlink Anything". The extension and documentation on how to install the extension, and set the required MEBGIS_HOME variable to the location of the data set on your system is included in the x:\nsgov\dig_prod_num\data_set_id\arcview\ext directory (example - c:\nsgov\dp305v1sh\g118a\arcview\ext) assuming that you used our default directories when downloading the data. The SHP product provides an ArcView project set up with the hotlinks working. Some modifications to the HOTLINK field in the database tables or in the HLFILES.TXT file may be required to make the hotlink work properly. Knowledge of ArcView and hotlinks may be required to make the native hotlink utility or our extension work properly

Problems and Limitations

Problems have been reported trying to import ARC E00 files into ArcView on Windows 95 computers. Related tables do not import into ArcView. It is not a problem on UNIX, Windows 3.1 or Windows NT, or Windows 2000 platforms. If you experience this problem you can use our DXF/DBF product which contains the tables in dBase format. dBase files can be imported into ArcView.

Geological maps and associated digital products are intended for use at the published scale of the map.
