Data Description
Abstract: This digital product is a compilation of geological data which was collected as part of the Targeted Geoscience Initiative Project from 2000-2003, as well as additional field mapping by C. E. White. The data was used to create Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources (NSNR&R) Open File Map OFM ME 2008-001, compiled by C. E. White and R. C. Boehner, 2008. The digital product was created by the NSNR&R, Mineral Resources Branch (MRB) staff. The original digital data was compiled from a number of sources and supplemented by field done during the course of the project. The digital product contains layers for geological features such as: drillholes, faults, bedrock geology units, geological contacts, mineral occurrences, neatline, outcrops, quarries and structural data.
Purpose: The purpose of this data set is to create digital versions of the data collected as part of the TGI Project and to produce a new 1:50 000 map. This digital product shows the bedrock geology of the Whycocomagh Area for 1:50 000 NTS map sheet 11F/14. TGI-1 Project Description: The Carboniferous bedrock in south-central Cape Breton Island is a proven host for gypsum, anhydrite, limestone, salt, potash, barite, base metals and crushed stone aggregate. In addition, the overlying Mesozoic and Cenozoic sediments are a potential source of high unit value silica and kaolin. Significant, long term exploitation of these resources has been inhibited by a poor understanding of the region's stratigraphic and structural relationships and associated resource genesis. Through integration of the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) and the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources (NSNR&R) expertise, this project is providing geoscience knowledge through the production of regional, baseline bedrock and surficial geological data in order to stimulate resource exploration and exploitation.

Data Quality Information

Positional Accuracy
Positional Accuracy Report: There may be positional accuracy errors in the digital data that come from the original data collection, plus there are errors added by the process of digitizing the features from the original published Map #MAPNO# or field maps. The trasfer of this data from older base maps onto the current base maps may also produce some error. The user should be aware that using this data overlaid on topographic data that was not used during the digital capture of the data may result in apparent errors in the locations of the data that may or may not be real. The user should always try and use background topographic data that is the same as the source topographic data noted in this metadata. The entire risk as to the quality and accuracy of the data is with the user and the user shall use his/her own judgment in making use of the data or drawing conclusions from it.

Processing Step Information

Processing Step (1 of 5)
Description: In 2000 MRB's GIS group began compiling data for the TGI-1 project from a number of different sources. Data from these sources will be released as their own digital product, but selected data from these sources was combined with the data collection that took place as part of TGI-1 and maintained as part of this digital product. Most of the digitizing and compilation of the data from other sources was done by term employee John MacNeil and casual employees Miranda Huskins and Julie Beamont under the direction of Brian Fisher and Jeff Poole.

Processing Step (2 of 5)
Description: From 2003 - 2007 a number of different taks were worked on as part of this project. QA/QC work on the databases was done by Jeff McKinnon; Bob Boeher worked on the compilation of the lowland geology while Chris White began the compilation for the highland areas.

Processing Step (3 of 5)
Description: In 2007 work began in ernest to complete both the hard copy map and the digital compilation. Chris White worked at completing the compilation, merging the contacts between the lowland and highland compilations. During this time Chris worked with Angie Ehler to complete the hard copy map, while Jeff McKinnon finalized the QA/QC.

Technical Prerequisite: Technical Prerequisites - GIS data In order to view our digital files on your computer, you require mapping software (e.g. ArcGIS, ArcInfo, ArcView, MapInfo, AutoCAD). If you do not have this software, ESRI provides two free Map Viewers called ArcExplorer 2 and ArcExplorer 9 which you can download over the Internet. ArcExplorer 2 works with our "E00", "SHP", "JPG", "SID" and "TIF" files, while ArcExplorer 9 works with our SHP, TIF, JPG and web services.. The "TIF" and "JPG" image file formats can be viewed in a number of graphics and image packages including CorelDraw and Paint Shop Pro. The MRSID "SID" images can be viewed in an increasing number of image packages as well as with a FREE MRSID viewer supplied by LizardTech. In order to use the E00 format data you need to download both ArcExplorer and the ArcExplorer Import Utility (Import71.exe). The import utility is required to convert the ArcInfo "E00" files into ArcInfo coverages, which then can be viewed in ArcExplorer. Links to free map viewers and other technical information can be found on our website at https://novascotia.ca/natr/meb/download/dpinfo.asp. Technical Prerequisites - PDF data In order to view our PDF files on your computer, you will require a PDF Viewer (e.g. Adobe Acrobat Reader). If you do not have this software, Adobe provides this software, Adobe provides this software for FREE download over the Internet. You will require Adobe Acrobat Reader version 6.0 or greater to view the PDF files. ArcView Project Information Our SHP products include an ArcView project which have all of the shapefiles symbolized and tables loaded with link and joins already created. This project uses relative paths so it should be drive and path independent. It can be found in the c:\data_set_id\arcview\project directory. ArcExplorer Project Information We have also included an ArcExplorer 2 project (.aep) and an ArcExplorer 4 (.axl) project for this data set that can be found in the c:\data_set_id\arcexpl directory. The shapefiles are already loaded and have limited symbolization, any related tables are not loaded. The AEP project uses relative paths and should be no problem using it without any changes. The AXL project includes a string "#DPMEPATH#" which you will need to search for and replace with your drive letter and a colon (ex: c:) in order to make the project work. Please note the if you do not install the data set using the default path you may need to replace other parts of the reference to the path in the AXL. Hotlinks In order to use the hotlink feature within ArcView 3.x in you may need to load MRB's Hotlink Anything extension which may be located in the arcview/ext directory along with documentation. You may also need to set the variable MEBGIS_HOME on your system to the location of the data set on your system. The SHP product provides an ArcView project set up with the hotlinks working. Some modifications to the HOTLINK field in the database tables or in the HLFILES may be required to make the hotlink work properly. Knowledge of ArcView and hotlinks may be required to make this work properly A feature called hotlinks is used in ArcView to link a feature such as a mineral occurrence or cross section to a single text file, image or website etc. For features that we want to link multiple items or documents to we have developed our own hotlink extension for ArcView 3.x called "Hotlink Anything". The extension and documentation on how to install the extension, and set the required MEBGIS_HOME variable to the location of the data set on your system is included in the x:\nsgov\dig_prod_num\data_set_id\arcview\ext directory (example - c:\nsgov\dp305v1sh\g118a\arcview\ext) assuming that you used our default directories when downloading the data, or can be downloaded from our website at https://novascotia.ca/natr/meb/download/dpexttool.asp. The SHP product provides an ArcView project set up with the hotlinks working if they exist for any of the shapefiles. Some modifications to the HOTLINK field in the database tables or in the HLFILES.TXT file may be required to make the hotlink utility work properly. Knowledge of ArcView and hotlinks may be required to make the native hotlink utility or our extension work properly on client computers. Problems and Limitations Problems have been reported trying to import ARC E00 files into ArcView on Windows 95 computers. Related tables do not import into ArcView. It is not a problem on UNIX, Windows 3.1, NT or 2000 platforms. If you experience this problem you can use our DXF/DBF product which contains the tables in dBase format. dBase files can be imported into ArcView. Geological maps and associated digital products are intended for use at the published scale of the map.
