| Abstract: | This digital product was developed as part of a Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources (NSNR&R) initiative to identify and characterize surficial aquifers in the province. | ||
| Purpose: | To build a spatial inventory and preliminary characterization of surficial aquifers across the province through the analysis of existing stratigraphic information and relevant historical reporting. An inventory of key surficial aquifers should improve the province's understanding of these water resources and assist groundwater development, protection and management efforts. | ||

| Description: | Main Processing steps: 1. Merged table of water wells, test holes meeting criteria for indicating presence of surficial aquifers created. 2. The 'Generate Near Table' geoprocessing tool was used to select only surficial aquifer points that have at least two other surficial aquifer points located within 500 m of each other. 3. The resulting point shapefile was then buffered by 500 m to create a polygon, and the 'Dissolve' geoprocessing tool was applied to the resulting point-buffer polygon to merge overlapping portions of polygons and create single-part polygon features with unique IDs. 4. A spatial join was then performed between the point shapefile generated in Step 2 and the polygon shapefile generated in Step 3 so that the polygon IDs could be transferred to the surficial aquifer points and each cluster of points could be associated with a unique polygon ID. 5. Using the 'Minimum Bounding Geometry' geoprocessing tool, the clusters of surficial aquifer points (grouped by surficial aquifer ID) were outlined (convex hull option), and unique surficial aquifer polygons enclosing these points were generated. The surficial aquifer polygons were then smoothed using the 'Smooth Polygon' geoprocessing tool (Bezier option), and the resulting polygons were buffered by 50 m for improved visualization. 6. The resulting surficial aquifer polygons were reviewed. Aquifers were added or merged, or boundaries refined, based on available surficial geology mapping (e.g. Stea et al., 1992) and a more detailed review of well log stratigraphic information surrounding the polygons. During this review, a maximum separation distance of 1000 m between any two surficial aquifer points was used for the purpose of enclosing a grouping of surficial aquifer points within a given surficial aquifer polygon. | ||

| Technical Prerequisite: | In order to view our digital files on your computer, you require mapping software (e.g. ArcGIS, ArcInfo, ArcView, MapInfo, AutoCAD). If you do not have this software, ESRI provides a number of free Map Viewers. These include ArcExplorer2 , ArcExplorer4 and ArcGIS Explorer which you can download over the Internet. ArcExplorer2 works with our E00, SHP, JPG, SID and TIF files, while ArcExplorer4 worked with our SHP, TIF, JPG and web services. ArcGIS Explorer will work with SHP, FGDB, and KML files. KML files can also be used with Google Earth. The TIF and JPG image file formats can be viewed in a number of graphics and image packages including CorelDraw and Paint Shop Pro. The MRSID SID images can be viewed in an increasing number of image packages as well as with a free MrSID viewer supplied by LizardTech. ArcMap Map Document Information Our SHP and FGDB products include an ArcMap map document (MXD files) which have all of the features symbolized and tables loaded with links and joins already created. These MXD's use relative paths so it should be drive and path independent. The MXD files can be found in the c:\nsDNR\data_set_id\arcmap\project directory. ArcGIS Explorer Map Files We have also included ArcGIS Explorer map files (NMF) for this dataset that can be found in the c:\data_set_id\arcgisexpl directory. They are part of the SHP and FGDB products.. The NMF files use relative paths and should work even if the dataset is put on a drive other than your C: drive. KML Files KML/KMZ files for this dataset can be found under the c:\nsDNR\data_set_id\kml directory. They can be opened using Google Earth, ArcGIS Explorer or a number of other GIS software packages. | ||
