Data Description
Abstract: This digital product is developed from the NovaROC database of mineral rights information for the province of Nova Scotia. The database is maintained by the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources (NSNR&R), Geoscience and Mines Branch (GMB). The digital product was developed from information contained in the NovaROC database and is updated every night at around 2:00 AM. The digital product contains layers for entities such as: exploration licences; special licences (coal, salt and potash, geothermal and minerals in a closure area); leases; hydrocarbon storage-area licences and leases; and non-mineral registrations. The extraction date-time field (EXTRCT_DT) identifies the date and time that the information was extracted from NovaROC. MINERAL RIGHTS DISCLAIMER: Information for this digital product was acquired from the NovaROC database at the date and time specified in the extraction date-time field (EXTRCT_DT) in the database. This information is an extraction from the database at a specific date and time and licensed and leased areas may not in all cases be found as shown. Data Quality Information

Positional Accuracy
Horizontal Accuracy Report: The spatial polygons contained in this product have been extracted directly from the NovaROC database. The entire risk as to the quality and accuracy of the data is with the user and the user shall use his/her own judgment in making use of the data or drawing conclusions from it.
Attribute Accuracy Report: Most of the fields in this database have been extracted directly from the NovaROC database and should maintain the same accuracy as the NovaROC database. The following four fields have been added to assist the client. HOLDR_NAME (Holder Name) - This is the name of the right holder. These values come from a spreadsheet of values extracted monthly from a NovaROC table that is not connected to the spatial database. At this time the GMB has no way to directly access the non-spatial tables and update the values every night. The value in the HOLDR_NAME field will be empty for any new "Holders" that appear in NovaROC after the spreadsheet is created. This will be rectified when the spreadsheet is updated which will take place normally at least once a month. TNR_TYP_DS (Tenure Type) - This is a descriptive field to explain the coded values that appear in the TNR_TYP_CD (Tenure Type Code) field. If any new tenure types appear in NovaROC the field will appear empty until the data extraction coding programs are updated to reflect the new value(s). TTL_TYP_DS (Title Type) - This is a descriptive field to explain the coded values that appear in the TTL_TYP_CD (Title Type Code) field. If any new title types appear in NovaROC the field will appear empty until the data extraction coding programs are updated to reflect the new value(s). STATUS_DS (Status) - This is a descriptive field to explain the coded values that appear in the STATUS_CD (Status Code) field. If any new status types appear in NovaROC the field will appear empty until the data extraction coding programs are updated to reflect the new value(s). EXTRCT_DT (Extract Date) - This field is added to the database and updated at the time the record is extracted from NovaROC.

Processing Step Information

Processing Step (1 of 4)
Description: In 1996 GMB began working on a process to extract all the mineral rights licenses and leases from the Advanced Revelations databases and provide the information to the public. The first version of this digital product, Nova Scotia Mineral Rights Database , (DP 051) was released on Oct 6, 2003. It also became known among many people as "All Apps". The final version of this database (Version 25) was released on April 29, 2013.
Software and Version: ArcInfo (many versions)
  Date: 2003 - April 2013

Processing Step (2 of 4)
Description: In August 2013 the GMB released NovaROC (https://novaroc.novascotia.ca/novaroc/page/home.jsf). Nova Scotia's Registry of Claims, is an internet accessible system for the acquisition and administration of mineral dispositions in Nova Scotia. The initial plan was to provide a SHP file and/or file geodatabase derived from NovaROC as a digital product, updated on a nightly basis, similar to what had been provided previously. Unfortunately were unable to get an extraction of the data from the online Viewer and the Oracle database that matched. This problem was resolved in March 2015 and we are now able to provide a nightly extraction from the NovaROC database that can be used by clients for their own use. The digital product has been renamed to the Nova Scotia Mineral Rights Database (NovaROC) and been given a new digital product number, DP493. This product is distinctly difference from the previous one. It normally will be updated every night at 2:00 AM.

Processing Step (3 of 4)
Description: The extraction and processing of the NovaROC mineral rights data and final FTP to government servers is done by a series of scripts written by David Hapgood and Jeff Poole in the spring of 2015 and located under C:\nsgov\minright\dp493_processing directory of the license manager server in the GMB GIS lab. All the scripts are run from a single batch file C:\nsgov\minright\dp493_processing\webexes\dp493v1_mstr.bat run at 2am everyday through the windows 'Task Scheduler' on the server. The order of the script processing is as follows: 1) NovaROC_export_6.0_prod.py The first script run is a python script that extracts the data from the NovaROC database and performs any data processing that is required. It requires the following look-up table (LUT) to be present and periodically updated in the following directory: rights.dbf- Holder Name LUT .... This DBF is extracted from the NovaROC database on a monthly basis other LUTs - A series of other lookup tables are also required that are located at C:\nsgov\minright\dp493_processing\NovaROC\dbf_lut_tables Location:"C:/nsgov/minright/dp493_processing/NovaROC/LatestRightsTable/rights.dbf" 2) Zip processing scripts ... zipdpme_493v1_sh.bat and zipdpme_493v1_gd.bat These batch files run ZipGenius 6 commands under C:\nsgov\minright\dp493_processing\webexes They zip up the SHP and File GDB data products from the NovaROC extraction and create zip files and self-extracting zip files. 3) SFTP of ZIP files to Gov't Web Servers (is69.cio.gov.ns.ca) for public to download This processing uses the psftp program to transfer the following ZIP files to the Gov't Web Server is69.cio.gov.ns.ca for public download. - dp493v1sh.zip and dp493v1gd.zip self-extracting exe/zip SHP and File GDB products respectively. - dp493v1sh_rz.zip and dp493v1gd_rz.zip raw zip files for SHP and File GDB products respectively. Data is stored in the following locations: Script locations - C:\nsgov\minright\dp493_processing ... see dp493v1_processing_readme.txt for specifics Raw NovaROC extraction - C:\nsgov\minright\dp493_processing\NovaROC\DailyBackup\gdb\DailyBackup.gdb Rights.xls spreadsheet - C:\nsgov\minright\dp493_processing\NovaROC\LatestRightsTable Other LUTs - C:\nsgov\minright\dp493_processing\NovaROC\dbf_lut_tables Processed data - located on the processing server currently in the GIS lab. SHP - C:\nsDNR\dp493v1sh\t493ns\shp\t493nsal.shp (generic name) and t493nsal_2015_05MAY_13_0200.shp (example ... time stamped product) File GDB - C:\nsDNR\dp493v1gd\t493ns\gdb\t493ns_mineral_rights_dp.gdb with t493nsal_mineral_rights_dp feature Class (generic name) and t493nsal_2015_05MAY_13_0200 (example ... time stamped name) Final data - Zip files under c:\nsDNR\ which include dp493v1sh.zip, dp493v1gd.zip, dp493v1sh_rz.zip and dp493v1gd_rz.zip S Drive - The final processed data will also be copied nightly to the S drive at S:\minright\ns\t493ns.

Technical Prerequisite: In order to view our digital files on your computer, you require mapping software (e.g. ArcGIS, ArcInfo, ArcView, MapInfo, AutoCAD). If you do not have this software, ESRI provides two free Map Viewer called ArcExplorer2 and ArcExplorer4 which you can download over the Internet. ArcExplorer2 works with our "E00", "SHP", "JPG", "SID" and "TIF" files, while ArcExplorer4 worked with our SHP, TIF, JPG and web services. The "TIF" and "JPG" image file formats can be viewed in a number of graphics and image packages including CorelDraw and Paint Shop Pro. The MRSID "SID" images can be viewed in an increasing number of image packages as well as with a free MrSID viewer supplied by LizardTech. Links for these and other map viewers can be found at https://novascotia.ca/natr/meb/download/gis-data-maps.asp. Data Formats MRB provides its digital data products in a number of formats. You can find our more information on these format and how to use them at https://novascotia.ca/natr/meb/download/dpformat.asp. Fonts A number of NR&R or GSC fonts may be required to properly view our data sets in an ArcMap project or to view the hard copy maps in a PDF format (normally the fonts will be embedded in the PDF). The fonts required for a particular data set may be found in the c:\nsDNR\dp999v9XX\d999YY\arcmap\fonts directory on your computer after you download the data set. A complete set of all of our fonts will be installed in the c:\nsDNR\fonts directory which is automatically installed and updated with our digital products. In order to see a complete list of fonts that are used and to download the NR&R and GSC fonts from our web site please go to https://novascotia.ca/natr/meb/download/dpinfo.asp. Any of these fonts can be installed on your computer by using going to Start - Settings - Control Panel - Fonts - File - Install. ArcMap Project Information Our SHP products include an ArcMap project which have all of the shapefiles symbolized and tables loaded with link and joins already created. This project uses relative paths so it should be drive and path independent. It can be found in the c:\data_set_id\arcmap\project directory. ArcView Project Information Our SHP products include an ArcView project which have all of the shapefiles symbolized and tables loaded with link and joins already created. This project uses relative paths so it should be drive and path independent. It can be found in the c:\data_set_id\arcview\project directory. ArcExplorer Project Information We have also included an ArcExplorer 2 project (.aep) and an ArcExplorer 4 (.axl) project for this data set that can be found in the c:\data_set_id\arcexpl directory. The shapefiles are already loaded and have limited symbolization, any related tables are not loaded. The AEP project uses relative paths and should be no problem using it without any changes. The AXL project includes a string "#DPMEPATH#" which you will need to search for and replace with your drive letter and a colon (ex: c:) in order to make the project work. Please note the if you do not install the data set using the default path you may need to replace other parts of the reference to the path in the AXL. Hotlinks In order to use the hotlink feature within ArcView 3.x in you may need to load MRB's Hotlink Anything extension which may be located in the arcview/ext directory along with documentation. You may also need to set the variable MEBGIS_HOME on your system to the location of the data set on your system. The SHP product provides an ArcView project set up with the hotlinks working. Some modifications to the HOTLINK field in the database tables or in the HLFILES may be required to make the hotlink work properly. Knowledge of ArcView and hotlinks may be required to make this work properly. A feature called hotlinks is used in ArcView to link a feature such as a mineral occurrence or cross section to a single text file, image or web site etc. For features that we want to link multiple items or documents to we have developed our own hotlink extension for ArcView 3.x called "Hotlink Anything". The extension and documentation on how to install the extension, and set the required MEBGIS_HOME variable to the location of the data set on your system is included in the x:\nsgov\dig_prod_num\data_set_id\arcview\ext directory (example - c:\nsgov\dp305v1sh\g118a\arcview\ext) assuming that you used our default directories when downloading the data. The SHP product provides an ArcView project set up with the hotlinks working. Some modifications to the HOTLINK field in the database tables or in the HLFILES.TXT file may be required to make the hotlink work properly. Knowledge of ArcView and hotlinks may be required to make the native hotlink utility or our extension work properly Problems and Limitations Problems have been reported trying to import ARC E00 files into ArcView on Windows 95 computers. Related tables do not import into ArcView. It is not a problem on UNIX, Windows 3.1 or Windows NT, or Windows 2000 platforms. If you experience this problem you can use our DXF/DBF product which contains the tables in dBase format. dBase files can be imported into ArcView. Geological maps and associated digital products are intended for use at the published scale of the map.
