Data Description
Abstract: The digital product contains 48 shaded relief images that are each provided in MrSID and JPEG formats. These images are produced from a 100 meter gridded Digital Elevation Model (DEM) with the sun shining along 8 different azimuths (0, 045, 090, 135, 180, 225, 270, 315) at 3 different altitudes (30°, 45°, 60°). The images were produced with two different vertical exaggerations (5 and 10). The digital product was created by the NSNR&R, Mineral Resources Branch (MRB) staff. The shaded relief images were derived from a DEM provided by the Nova Scotia Geomatics Center (see cross reference 1 for DP ME 55).
Purpose: To produce a series of shaded relief images from a digital elevation model for the Province of Nova Scotia. This product may be useful in a number of applications, including terrain analysis, watershed mapping, structural interpretation, surfical and bedrock mapping.

Data Quality Information

Positional Accuracy
Positional Accuracy Report: The 100 meter shaded relief images were derived from a 100 metre DEM. The 100 metre DEM was derived by re-sampling and gridding a 20 metre DEM provided by the Nova Scotia Geomatics Center to 100 metres. The 20 metre DEM was produced from vector data contained in the 1:10 000 Digital Resource Mapping Series (see cross reference 1). There may be positional accuracy errors in the digital data that come from the original data collection, plus there are errors added by the process of gridding the data. The entire risk as to the quality and accuracy of the data is with the user and the user shall use his/her own judgment in making use of the data or drawing conclusions from it.

Source Contribution: The elevation values contained in the Enhanced Digital Elevation Model for Nova Scotia were used to create the 100 metre grid cell size DEM that was used to create the shaded relief images. Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations, Registry and Information Management Services, Nova Scotia Geomatics Centre produced the Enhanced Digital Elevation Model in conjunction with the Department of Natural Resources, the Department of Environment, and the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries. This product was generated at a resolution of 20 meters and geographically covers the Province of Nova Scotia. The Enhanced Digital Elevation Model was developed in the Grid environment of ArcInfo version 7.1 using the topogrid command. This interpolation method generated a hydrologically correct grid of elevation for Nova Scotia. Input coverages were selected from the 1:10 000 Digital Resource Mapping Series. The input coverages include: elevation points, irregularly spaced approximately 80 meters; elevation points, representing hydrologic features (streams); open water outlines with elevation values (lakes, coastline); breakline features (cliffs); contour lines - 5 meter where applicable; spot heights - where applicable

Processing Step Information

Processing Step (1 of 7)
Description: The first step in the creation of the shaded relief images was the creation of a 20 meter DEM. This was done as part of a joint product with NSGC and a number of other government departments (see cross reference 1). The processing report, written by NSGC, outlining the creation of the DEM is included with the metadata for that product (DP ME 55).

Processing Step (2 of 7)
Description: The final shaded relief images required by NR&R needed to be in MrSID format for more efficient storage of the data. In order to do this the original 20 meter DEM had to be re-sampled to 100 meters to allow use of the MrSID software to convert the images to MrSID format. For this we used the 'unfilled' integer grid in ArcGrid fromat, supplied by NSGC, called ns_dem (later renamed to e055ns20-dem020st). The new 100 meter grid was called e057ns1c-dem100st. The 'unfilled' grid was used because we believe it to be better for geological interpretation. The original sampling technique used in resampling the DEM to 100m resolution was bilinear interpolation. Therefore testing was done by resampling the DEM using nearest neighbor and cubic convolution in order to determine if this would maximize results. However, it was decided that bilinear interpolation gave the best results. Testing was also done on whether the results would change if the resampling was done to the hillshaded DEM instead of the raw DEM. Using cubic convolution would not process and using nearest neighbor did not give better results, therefore it was determined that the initial processing steps used were the best. This work was done by casual employee Jeff McKinnon.

Processing Step (3 of 7)
Description: The shaded relief images were derived from the new 100 meter grid e057ns1c-dem100st. Shaded relief images were created for a number of different azimuths, altitudes and using two vertical exaggerations. The TIFF images were then converted to MrSID format and the TIFFs were deleted from the system. This was done because each of the TIFFs were large and we were unable to store these on our system. The other concern was to determine the correct compression ratio to use in MrSID to get the smallest file size with the least amount of data loss. After a large amount of testing it was determined that the best value was 1:12 (with the compression being adjusted to approx. 1:35). The MrSID format compresses the images to about 0.75 Mb and the images display very quickly in ArcView. The work was done by Jeff McKinnon using scripts written by Jeff Poole called: DEM_MAIN_S, DEM_MAKE_HS_SID_S, DEM_TIFF_TO_SID_S AND MRSID-K.

Processing Step (6 of 7)
Description: In September 2005 the MrSID files were converted from UTM zone 20 NAD27 coordinates to UTM zone 20 NAD 83 coordinates by Jeff McKinnon. This was done by re-running the scripts used to created the UTM NAD27 images, but using a re-projected UTM NAD83 input grid.

ArcExplorer(R) works with our "E00", "SHP", "JPG", "SID" and "TIF" files. The "TIF" and "JPG" image file formats can be viewed in a number of graphics and image packages including CorelDraw* and Paint Shop Pro. The MRSID "SID" images can be viewed in an increasing number of image packages as well as with a FREE MRSID viewer supplied by LizardTech*. In order to use the E00 format data you need to download both ArcExplorer(R) and the ArcExplorer(R) Import Utility (Import71.exe). The import utility is required to convert the ArcInfo "E00" files into ArcInfo coverages, which then can be viewed in ArcExplorer(R).
