Data Description
Abstract: This digital product is a digital version of Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources, Mineral Resources Branch (MRB) Open File Map ME 2004-1, Shaded Relief Map of Nova Scotia, compiled by Brian Fisher, Jeff Poole, Jeff McKinnon and Julie Beaumont, 2004. The digital product was created by the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources, Mineral Resources Branch (MRB) staff. This provincial map uses a 100 metre shaded relief image for all of Nova Scotia. It is shaded from an azimuth of 315 degrees with the sun at an altitude of 45 degrees and uses a vertical exaggeration of 10. It contains smaller image windows that are all shaded relief images, covering the same area, and are derived from a 25 metre DEM. Each window shows shading from a different azimuth and altitude, each with a vertical exaggeration of 10. They are meant to demonstrate the effects on the shaded relief images as the sun moves from one azimuth and altitude to another.
Purpose: This map is meant to be a description of how the shaded relief images contained in DP ME 56 and DP ME 57 were created and provide examples of the effect of changes in azimuth and altitude on the appearance of the image and thus aid in terrain analysis, structural interpretation, surfical and bedrock mapping.

Data Quality Information

Positional Accuracy
Accuracy Report: The 25 and 100 metre shaded relief images contained on this map were derived from 25 and 100 metre DEMs. The DEMs were derived by re-sampling and gridding a 20 metre DEM provided by the Nova Scotia Geomatics Center to 25 and 100 metres. The 20 metre DEM was produced from vector data contained in the 1:10 000 Digital Resource Mapping Series (see cross reference 1). There may be positional accuracy errors in the digital data that come from the original data collection, plus there are errors added by the process of gridding the data. The entire risk as to the quality and accuracy of the data is with the user and the user shall use his/her own judgment in making use of the data or drawing conclusions from it.

Source Contribution: The elevation values contained in the Enhanced Digital Elevation Model for Nova Scotia were used to create the 25 metre grid cell size DEM that was used to create the shaded releif images. Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations, Registry and Information Management Services, Nova Scotia Geomatics Centre produced the Enhanced Digital Elevation Model in conjunction with the Department of Natural Resources, the Department of Environment, and the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries. This product was generated at a resolution of 20 meters and geographically covers the province of Nova Scotia. The Enhanced Digital Elevation Model was developed in the Grid environment of ArcInfo version 7.1 using the topogrid command. This interpolation method generated a hydrologically correct grid of elevation for Nova Scotia. Input coverages were selected from the 1:10 000 Digital Resource Mapping Series. The input coverages include: elevation points, irregularly spaced approximately 80 meters; elevation points, representing hydrologic features (streams); open water outlines with elevation values (lakes, coastline); breakline features (cliffs); contour lines - 5 meter where applicable; spot heights - where applicable

Processing Step Information

Processing Step (1 of 3)
Description: In October - November 2003, casual employee Julie Beaumont created a rough draft map describing how the shaded relief images were created and the effect of the change of azimuth and altitude on the image. This was to be used as a poster for display at the 2003 Mining Matters Conference.
  Software and Version: ArcView 3.2a
  Date: October - November 2003

Processing Step (2 of 3)
Description: In April 2004, casual employee Jeff McKinnon created a final copy map to be released as Open File Map 2004-1. The changes that were made to the original draft include: changing the sample area to better illustrate the effects of the changes in azimuth and altitude, using the original shaded relief images (ie. DP ME 56 and 57) rather than the shaded relief images that Julie Beaumont created, adding a white polygon fill for lakes of a larger area, and basic changes of a cartographic nature (eg. adding graticule, changing font size, adding NB and PEI, etc.)

Processing Step (3 of 3)
Description: In May 2004 the Open File wap was released as OFM ME 2004-1 and the digital product was released in PDF format as digital product DP ME 105.
