Data Description
Abstract: This digital product is a compilation of geological data which was collected as part of Dan Kontak's mapping of the basaltic rocks of the North Mountain Formation . The data was used to create Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources (NSNR&R) Open File Maps OFM ME 2010-7, OFM ME 2010-8, OFM ME 2010-9, OFM ME 2010-10, OFM 2010-11, and OFM ME 2010-12, compiled by D. J. Kontak and T. L. Webster, 2010. The digital product was created by the NSNR&R, Mineral Resources Branch (MRB) staff. The original digital data was compiled using Dan Kontak's field work and high resolution LIDAR imagery (DP ME 455) provided by Tim Webster (AGRG). The digital product contains layers for geological features such as: age dates, drillholes, faults, bedrock geology, geological contacts, neatline, mineral occurrences, small outcrops, reference outlines, an index for mapsheets, and an overview index of the map series.
Purpose: The purpose of this data set is to create a digital version of the geology of the North Mountain Formation, and to produce 5 new 1:50 000 maps. This digital product shows the bedrock geology on parts of 1:50 000 NTS map sheets 21A/05, 21A/12, 21A/11, 21A/12, 21A/13, 21A/14, 21A/15, 21B/01, 21B/08, 21B/09, 21H/01, 21H/02, 21H/03, 21H/07, and 21H/08.

Data Quality Information
Positional Accuracy
Horizontal Accuracy Report: There may be positional accuracy errors in the digital data that come from the original data collection, plus there are errors added by the process of digitizing the features from the original published map or field maps. The trasfer of this data from older base maps onto the current base maps may also produce some error. The user should be aware that using this data overlaid on topographic data that was not used during the digital capture of the data may result in apparent errors in the locations of the data that may or may not be real. The user should always try and use background topographic data that is the same as the source topographic data noted in this metadata. The entire risk as to the quality and accuracy of the data is with the user and the user shall use his/her own judgment in making use of the data or drawing conclusions from it.

Processing Step (5 of 6)
Description: From 2007 - 2008 the GIS Group at NR&R has been working on creating a digital product and a series of maps for the North Mountain area. The first work wasd done by John MacNeil. Following is a description of the work done by John. 2007 - Data was extracted from a corel file registered to the 50k coastline CZS as the same base info was used and matched exactly. This information was used to produce a map for Open House 2007. Using the High resolution Lidar image from AGRG (Tim Webster), Dan was able to better define the contacts. He annotated a printed map and delivered to NR&R. John MacNeil updated contacts using the paper maps supplied by Dan K. in Jan08 and April,08. These maps were scanned and registered to base and the new information was digitized in ArcGIS. dan_edits.jpg Early 2008 After review of edits, Dan requested 3 8.5x11 prints of specific areas and made edits to these. He subsequently mailed them back to NR&R in April 2008. updates rec'd in April 2008 south.tif mid.tif north.tif Revisions included; changed contacts and faults, removal and addition of outcrop points. Contacts, outcrops, and faults were identified and edited. ArcView Project Information Our SHP products include an ArcView project which have all of the shapefiles symbolized and tables loaded with link and joins already created. This project uses relative paths so it should be drive and path independent. It can be found in the c:\data_set_id\arcview\project directory. ArcExplorer Project Information We have also included an ArcExplorer 2 project (.aep) and an ArcExplorer 4 (.axl) project for this data set that can be found in the c:\data_set_id\arcexpl directory. The shapefiles are already loaded and have limited symbolization, any related tables are not loaded. The AEP project uses relative paths and should be no problem using it without any changes. The AXL project includes a string "#DPMEPATH#" which you will need to search for and replace with your drive letter and a colon (ex: c:) in order to make the project work. Please note the if you do not install the data set using the default path you may need to replace other parts of the reference to the path in the AXL. Hotlinks In order to use the hotlink feature within ArcView 3.x in you may need to load MRB's Hotlink Anything extension which may be located in the arcview/ext directory along with documentation. You may also need to set the variable MEBGIS_HOME on your system to the location of the data set on your system. The SHP product provides an ArcView project set up with the hotlinks working. Some modifications to the HOTLINK field in the database tables or in the HLFILES may be required to make the hotlink work properly. Knowledge of ArcView and hotlinks may be required to make this work properly. A feature called hotlinks is used in ArcView to link a feature such as a mineral occurrence or cross section to a single text file, image or web site etc. For features that we want to link multiple items or documents to we have developed our own hotlink extension for ArcView 3.x called "Hotlink Anything". The extension and documentation on how to install the extension, and set the required MEBGIS_HOME variable to the location of the data set on your system is included in the x:\nsgov\dig_prod_num\data_set_id\arcview\ext directory (example - c:\nsgov\dp305v1sh\g118a\arcview\ext) assuming that you used our default directories when downloading the data. The SHP product provides an ArcView project set up with the hotlinks working. Some modifications to the HOTLINK field in the database tables or in the HLFILES.TXT file may be required to make the hotlink work properly. Knowledge of ArcView and hotlinks may be required to make the native hotlink utility or our extension work properly Problems and Limitations Problems have been reported trying to import ARC E00 files into ArcView on Windows 95 computers. Related tables do not import into ArcView. It is not a problem on UNIX, Windows 3.1 or Windows NT, or Windows 2000 platforms. If you experience this problem you can use our DXF/DBF product which contains the tables in dBase format. dBase files can be imported into ArcView. Geological maps and associated digital products are intended for use at the published scale of the map.
