SHARE - Access to the Drug Information System through SHARE

Access in Hospitals and in the Community

All community pharmacies in Nova Scotia have been connected to the Drug Information System since November 2016 (or earlier). Access to patient medication profiles through the Drug Information System Portal and SHARE Clinical Portal is available to prescribers and non-prescribers, in hospital and in the community.

Access and Functionality

Depending on their role, authorized healthcare providers are able to access patient medication profiles through either the Drug Information System Portal or the SHARE Clinical Portal.

Drug Information System Portal

The Drug Information System Portal allows users to see medication profiles in the system, to add information to or update existing information in patient profiles, and to create prescriptions electronically, or e-prescribe.

This portal is used primarily by prescribers, which includes physicians, nurse practitioners, RN prescribers, midwives, dentists, dental hygienists, optometrists, and hospital pharmacists. Community pharmacists access the Drug Information System through their pharmacy software system.

SHARE Clinical Portal

The SHARE Clinical Portal is a view-only portal to information contained in the provincial electronic health record system known as SHARE. The Drug Information System is a component of SHARE. Patient medication profiles are included in SHARE’s clinical repository of patient information.

Users of this portal are able to view their patients’ medication profiles (this portal cannot be used to add or update information or e-prescribe). Users are able to access their patients’ medication profiles through the “Community Med Profile” tab.

Depending on their role, users may have access through this portal to other types of patient information contained in SHARE (like lab values, diagnostic imaging and other types of clinical reports). The Drug Information System Portal has access to patient medication profiles only.

Access to the Drug information System through the SHARE clinical portal includes clinical staff and administrative support staff as appropriate in hospital and in the community.
