Electronic Medical Records and Integrated Solutions - Electronic Medical Records Certification

Right now, providers in Nova Scotia can choose from 2 provincial Electronic Medical Record (EMR) products:

A certified EMR must meet all mandatory EMR requirements as outlined in the Master Certification and Services Agreement. An EMR vendor cannot market EMR products as a certified EMR in Nova Scotia until they have completed initial certification requirements.

A certified EMR includes a variety of functional, technical, privacy, interoperability and quality indicator data requirements, as well as data migration and reporting requirements. Certified EMR vendors are responsible for hosting and operational support of their systems (EMR users turn to their vendors for operational support).

The EIS Program's assessment of EMRs ensures certified EMRs meet provincial standards to support delivery of quality patient care and to support the strategic and operational objectives of Nova Scotia and end users. New requirements will be introduced by the EIS Program as required through change orders defining new requirements. Some change orders could be optional and others mandatory.

Vendors are responsible for ensuring their EMR continues to meet provincial EMR certification requirements identified in initial certification requirements, and all requirements identified in mandatory change orders.

The Department of Health and Wellness will update this website to report vendors' status meeting provincial EMR certification requirements.
